    Today (March 26, 2020), Igor Matovič, Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic used his first talk with the European leaders to send a strong signal, expressing that the new government of the Slovak Republic is involved in a maximum mobilisation in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. During the meeting of the leaders, which took place in the form of a videoconference and replaced the regular March summit, the Prime Minister confirmed the clear pro-European direction of the new cabinet. He assured the European leaders that Slovakia will be a reliable partner that will support joint and effective European solutions, and this not only in response to the current crisis.

Due to restrictions related to the spread of the new coronavirus, the meeting took place in the form of a videoconference and replaced the regular formal meeting of the General Affairs Council in Brussels (GAC).

    he relations between the European Union and Russia, as well as Turkey, were the core topics of the informal EU foreign affairs ministerial meeting held today (5 March 2020) in Lužnica, Croatia, near Zagreb. “The regular informal meeting provides an opportunity to discuss topics of strategic importance in an informal atmosphere, which contributes to a more open and sincere discussion. We especially discussed the EU’s relations with Russia and Turkey,” stated Miroslav Lajčák.

    The Multiannual Financial Framework, the future of the European Union and EU enlargement – these were among the themes that the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Miroslav Lajčák, and Karoline Edtstadler, Federal Minister for EU Affairs and the Constitution of the Republic of Austria, discussed today (February 12, 2020). “I very much appreciate this open and constructive discussion, as part of which we clearly determined where our positions with Austria overlap and also, where they diverge. I see that we have a lot in common with Austria in the area of European policy,” said Miroslav Lajčák after the meeting, which was also attended by the State Secretary František Ružička.

    State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic František Ružička talked in Brussels with the cabinet of the European Council President Charles Michel on the multiannual financial framework for 2021-2027. The talks were held on 22 January in the wake of the strong mandate that the President of the European Council Michel obtained from the leaders at the summit in December 2019 to finalize the talks on the future 7-year EU budget.

    Today (November 18, 2019) in Brussels, Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic met with Josep Borrel, Vice-President Designate of the European Commission and the future High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy and Security Policy. The meeting was a follow up of the discussion that the two officials had at the beginning of October this year. The talks focussed on the current challenges of the EU foreign policy. With regards to the South-Eastern region of Europe, Miroslav Lajčák said that it was in the interest of the EU that the enlargement process continues in a trustworthy manner, and that there is no alternative to the full-fledged membership of those countries in the region that fulfil the necessary criteria.

    On Monday (21 October 2019) during his visit to Germany, the State Secretary of the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry of the Slovak Republic František Ružička held discussions with his counterpart the Minister of State for Europe at the German Federal Foreign Office Michael Roth, the Advisor on Foreign Policy to the Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel Uwe Corsepius, and the Chair of the Parliamentary Friendship Group for relations with Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary Renáta Alt. With Michael Roth he opened the 8th session of the Slovak-German Reflection Group which was devoted to the future of the European Union and developments in Ukraine.
